Phase-3 Power Electrician

If you’ve been told your home might need 3-phase power, you’re probably wondering: What is it? Why do I need it? Is it even necessary?

In this guide, we’ll explain what 3-phase power is, how it compares to standard single-phase setups, and when Sydney homeowners should consider upgrading.

What Is 3-Phase Power?

3-phase power is a method of distributing electricity using three alternating currents instead of one. This type of power supply is commonly used in commercial buildings and industrial applications but is increasingly being installed in larger or high-demand residential properties.

In short:

  • Single-phase = one live wire, suitable for basic home needs
  • 3-phase = three live wires, offering higher capacity and better balance

What Are the Benefits of 3-Phase Power at Home?

Handles More Load – Ideal for homes with heavy appliances (EV chargers, ducted air conditioning, commercial kitchen gear)

More Stable Voltage – Reduces voltage drops and power dips during high usage

Future-Proofs Your Home – Supports modern energy demands, solar setups, and battery storage systems

Improves Efficiency – Especially when multiple high-draw appliances are running simultaneously

When Do You Need 3-Phase Power in Sydney?

You should consider a 3-phase upgrade if:

  • You have or are installing ducted air conditioning
  • You’re planning to install an electric vehicle (EV) charger
  • Your home has multiple high-power appliances running at once (e.g. spa, workshop equipment)
  • You’re building a large house or granny flat
  • You’re having frequent power trips or flickering when multiple devices are used

Not sure? Selectrical can perform a load analysis and help you determine if an upgrade is necessary.

Some of the Myths

Myth: Only commercial buildings use 3-phase
✔️ Fact: More Sydney homes are using 3-phase for modern appliances and growing energy needs

Myth: It’s more expensive to run
✔️ Fact: It’s not the power that costs more — it’s the appliances you choose to connect

Myth: You only need it if your lights flicker
✔️ Fact: Flickering is a sign your single-phase system may be overloaded — but a proper load check is needed first

How Is 3-Phase Power Installed?

Upgrading to 3-phase involves:

  1. Assessment – We review your switchboard and electrical load
  2. Application – Lodgement with your local energy network (Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy)
  3. Disconnection – Temporary shutoff of your power during works
  4. New Cabling & Metering – Installation of 3-phase supply and compatible smart meter
  5. Testing & Certification – We ensure full compliance and notify your provider

The process usually takes 1–2 days depending on site access and existing infrastructure.

Do I Need a Level 2 Electrician?

Yes — only a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) is authorised to upgrade your mains power supply and install 3-phase connections in NSW.

At Selectrical, we’re fully licensed to carry out this work, including all required paperwork and network provider coordination.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of a 3-phase upgrade in Sydney varies depending on:

  • Distance from the street to your switchboard
  • Whether your switchboard needs upgrading
  • Pole access or underground cabling
  • Type of meter and DNSP requirements

Typical prices start around $1,500 to $3,000 (subject to site inspection).
