A Service Protection Device (SPD) is a circuit breaker designed to interrupt a fault current between your main switchboard and the network. While a Meter Protection Device (MPD) acts as an isolation point when there is an electrical issue or short circuit, preventing damage to the meter.

This will also allow the electricity retailer to disconnect any particular electricity supply without affecting the whole property. For instance, if the granny flat tenants don’t pay their electricity bill, the retailer can disconnect their electricity supply without impacting the main house.

How do SPDs and MPDs work?

Meter Protection Devices (MPDs) work by isolating the whole-current metering and diverting excess voltage when more than one meter is installed, protecting other meters from electrical issues such as short circuits or power surges which can lead to fires and electrical hazards.
