What is a Private Power Pole and When Do You Need One?

A private power pole is the structure on your property that connects your home or business to the electricity network. Unlike the poles owned by your local network provider, private poles sit within your property boundary, which means maintenance, repair, and replacement are entirely your responsibility as the property owner.

Many Sydney homeowners only discover this when they receive a defect notice from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, or when visible damage makes the issue impossible to ignore. Ignoring a private pole defect can result in your network provider disconnecting your supply without further notice.

Private Power Pole Services in Sydney

Private Pole Installation

If your property requires a new overhead connection point, whether it’s a new build, a knockdown-rebuild, or a new subdivision, we install private power poles that fully comply with Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, and Essential Energy network requirements. Every installation includes the appropriate service fuse, weatherhead, and mast configuration for your property type.

Pole Replacement & Upgrades

Damaged, decayed, or non-compliant poles need to be replaced promptly to maintain your electricity supply and avoid disconnection. We replace old timber poles with treated hardwood or galvanised steel and handle all necessary notifications and reconnection approvals with your network provider. If your current pole cannot support a switchboard upgrade or 3-phase connection, we can replace and upgrade in a single visit — see our Switchboard Upgrade service.

Inspection & Maintenance

Unsure of your pole’s condition? Our Level 2 electricians will inspect the structure, attachments, and connections and provide a written condition report. Regular inspections, every 5–10 years, help you avoid emergency replacements and catch defect issues before your network provider does.

Why NSW Law Requires a Certified Level 2 Electrician

Get In Touch Today

In New South Wales, all work involving private power poles and service connections to the electricity network must be performed by a licensed Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP). This isn’t a best-practice recommendation, it is a legal requirement under the NSW Service & Installation Rules, enforced by IPART and the network distributors.

Private pole work involves operating at the boundary between your property’s electrical infrastructure and the public distribution network. Errors at this interface can cause supply outages, network faults, and serious safety hazards for residents and lineworkers alike.

A Level 2 ASP is authorised to install, replace, and connect private poles; coordinate disconnections and reconnections with network distributors; and submit all required compliance documentation to Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, and Essential Energy. Using an unlicensed contractor for this work is illegal, invalidates insurance, and will not be accepted by your network provider. Learn more about our Level 2 electrician services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is responsible for maintaining a private power pole?
If the pole is within your property boundary even if it also supports a neighbour's or the street's connection it is classified as a private pole and is your responsibility to maintain and replace. Your network provider owns and maintains street-side poles up to the first point of connection on your property. If you're unsure, we can assess during a free site visit.
How long does a private power pole last?
Treated hardwood poles typically last 30–40 years depending on soil conditions, moisture, and termite activity. Galvanised steel poles can last 40+ years with minimal maintenance. Regular inspections every 5–10 years help identify deterioration before it becomes a safety or compliance issue.
I've received a defect notice from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. What do I do?
Contact us as soon as possible. A defect notice means your private pole or associated infrastructure has been identified as non-compliant or unsafe. Defect notices include a rectification deadline missing it can result in disconnection without further notice. We'll assess the scope, provide a fixed quote, and lodge all required approvals to get the work done within your deadline. See our Defect Notice Rectification service.
How long does a private power pole replacement take?
Most standard pole replacements are completed in a single day once approvals are in place. The actual disconnection, installation, and reconnection typically takes 4–8 hours depending on site conditions and the scope of associated works. Contact us early if you have a tight defect deadline, we can often fast-track approvals.
Can I choose between a timber or steel pole?
Yes. We install both treated hardwood and hot-dip galvanised steel poles. Hardwood is the lower upfront cost option; steel offers greater longevity and suits coastal areas or properties with high moisture or salt exposure. We'll advise on the most suitable option during the free site assessment.
Do you manage the network disconnection and reconnection?
Yes. As a licensed Level 2 ASP, we coordinate all planned disconnections and reconnections directly with Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, or Essential Energy. You don't need to contact your distributor separately. View our Reconnection & Disconnection service.
What if my overhead cables also need replacing?
It's common to replace overhead cables at the same time as the pole, especially if they show UV degradation, storm damage, or are near end-of-life. We can quote both as a combined job, which is more cost-effective than separate mobilisations. See our Overhead Electrical Cables service.
Can you replace the pole and upgrade my switchboard at the same time?
Yes. Combining a pole replacement with a switchboard upgrade is efficient and often saves on total labour cost. Our Level 2 electricians are also licensed to carry out internal switchboard work. View our Switchboard Upgrade service.
What areas do you service?
We cover all of Greater Sydney across both the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy network areas — including the Inner West, South Western Sydney, Western Sydney, Hills District, and Eastern Suburbs. Call us on (02) 9188 8485 to confirm coverage for your suburb.
How much does a private power pole replacement cost?
Costs vary depending on pole type, height, access conditions, and whether associated works such as overhead cable replacement or a switchboard upgrade are included. We provide fixed-price, obligation-free quotes after a site assessment. Call (02) 9188 8485 or submit a quote request above.
