News & Resources

If you’re a homeowner in Sydney, chances are you’ve heard about smart meters , but you may not be sure what they do or whether you need one.
In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know, including what smart meters are, how they’re different from older meters, how much they cost, and how to get one installed legally and safely.
What Is a Smart Meter?
A smart meter is a digital electricity meter that records your energy usage in real-time and communicates that information directly to your electricity retailer. Unlike older meters that need to be read manually, smart meters automatically send usage data via a secure wireless network.
Benefits of Smart Meters for Sydney Homeowners
Switching to a smart meter offers multiple advantages:
✅ No More Manual Meter Reads. Say goodbye to estimated bills and waiting for someone to access your meter.
✅ Real-Time Usage Monitoring. Access detailed information on your electricity use via online portals or apps.
✅ Faster Fault Detection. Smart meters can alert your provider to power outages instantly.
✅ Flexible Tariffs. Take advantage of off-peak rates and time-of-use pricing to reduce your energy bill.
✅ Remote Connection & Disconnection. Ideal for rentals, renovations, and smoother move-ins/outs.
How Do Smart Meters Work?
Smart meters measure your electricity usage at 30-minute intervals and automatically transmit that data to your energy retailer. This makes billing faster, more accurate, and more transparent.
You can also monitor your own consumption through apps provided by your energy company, helping you reduce your energy usage and carbon footprint.
Are Smart Meters Mandatory in NSW?
Yes, in most new installations or upgrades, a smart meter is required. Under NSW legislation, all new and replacement meters must be smart meters unless an exemption is granted.
If your home still has an analogue or interval meter, it may be worth upgrading now to future-proof your property.
Who Can Install a Smart Meter in NSW?
Only an Accredited Level 2 ASP (Authorised Service Provider) can legally install or replace a smart meter in NSW. That’s where we come in.
At Selectrical, we’re fully licensed to carry out metering works across the Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks.
What Does Installation Involve?
Here’s what you can expect when you book a smart meter installation with Selectrical:
- Assessment. We inspect your current switchboard and site conditions.
- Disconnection. Power is safely isolated before works begin.
- Meter Replacement. Your existing meter is removed and replaced with a digital smart meter.
- Reconnection & Testing. We reconnect your power, test the new system, and complete final paperwork.
The whole process usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours and causes minimal disruption.
How Much Does a Smart Meter Cost in NSW?
In most cases, your energy retailer covers the cost of the meter.
If you’re requesting an upgrade privately (e.g. as part of a renovation), the cost typically ranges from $300–$600 depending on site access, switchboard condition, and configuration.
Upgrades may also require a switchboard upgrade, especially if it lacks space or safety switches.
